Active contribution to public health system continues – Actions to support network of OPAP and PLAY stores
OPAP is implementing again fresh initiatives to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and is proceeding to the other phase of its initiatives. Specifically, in order to boost the public health system during this crucial period, OPAP is donating supplies and equipment to cover pressing and immediate needs of health authorities and hospital units.
At the same time, the company is implementing a program of targeted actions to support its network of partners, who are directly affected by the suspension of OPAP and PLAY store activities.
500,000 masks and medical equipment to three hospitals
Aiming to further contribute to the national effort to tackle the pandemic and assist the work at hospital units nationwide, OPAP is directly supporting the competent bodies, by donating 500,000 surgical masks and required medical equipment, for use by doctors and nurses of public hospitals. OPAP’s donation has been made to the support mechanism established by the Ministry of Health and will benefit three hospitals.
In this framework, the ATTIKON University General Hospital, which is dedicated to treating COVID-19 patients, will be provided with 350,000 masks. Moreover, the Aghia Sophia General Children’s Hospital will receive 90,000 masks and the Panagiotis & Aglaia Kyriacou General Children’s Hospital will receive 60,000 masks. Covering specific needs of the Panagiotis & Aglaia Kyriacou hospital, hemodynamic monitors for the monitoring of vital body parts and vital parameters monitor, all of which are suitable for use in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), surgeries and hospital wards among other facilities, will be also donated.
This donation is part of a series of OPAP actions in support of public health. It is noted that the company continues to implement a project for the complete renovation of the country’s two largest children’s hospitals. Having invested over 14 million euros, OPAP has already completed 80% of the renovation of Aghia Sophia and Panagiotis & Aglaia Kyriacou hospitals. In total, 25 renovation works have been delivered, upgrading the infrastructure of both hospitals. These include a state of the art Infectious Diseases unit, which allows the treatment of coronavirus patients.
Additionally, with the support of OPAP, the Smile of the Child organization has redirected mobile units used for the “OPAP in the Neighborhood” preventive medicine program, placing them at the disposal of the public health system, in order for urgent needs to be covered. Moreover, OPAP and doctoranytime, a member of the OPAP Forward entrepreneurship program, call on people in need to consult a doctor during this period, to use the online service “speak with a doctor online”. This service is a platform for communication and information that utilizes the network of certified doctors-partners of doctoranytime. To date, the platform has been used by more than 50,000 visitors, who have been informed about COVID-19.
It is noted that the new cycle of the OPAP Forward program – which supports the growth prospects of dynamic businesses and the creation of jobs and added value for the economy – will prioritize the inclusion of businesses that actively support the efforts of the State and public health system to contain the spread of coronavirus. An evaluation of companies that have applied to participate in the program is currently underway.
Special support action for OPAP network partners
Due to the pandemic, the activity of OPAP and PLAY stores has been suspended as of 14 March, with OPAP network partners being amongst the first to be affected by the impact of the health crisis. It is noted that OPAP’s commercial network consists of approximately 4,500 points of sale, with more than 15,000 employees across Greece.
From the very first moment, OPAP took targeted action to support the company’s network, boosting its mechanism for systematic communication with its partners and implementing actions and measures offering immediate relief. Among other things, a set of actions was implemented to provide financial relief to OPAP and PLAY stores, such as a suspension of short-term payments, measures to mitigate operating costs, the suspension of the repayment of construction loans the company has granted to develop or modernize stores, etc.
Furthermore, the company is ready to extend its support to partners, as it is preparing financial support measures for the future, whose aim is to cover the different needs of all agencies. At the same time, OPAP is supporting all partners via actions focusing on providing information and consulting on the use of measures announced by the government to support businesses and employees.
